Product rendering is the process of creating photorealistic images of a product from a 3D model instead of a camera. Model once, then render studio shots, lifestyle scenes, 360° spins and every colour variant — before a single unit is manufactured. Expect $99–$300 per simple white-background image, first test renders in 1–3 days, and real savings once you pass five to ten images per product. Photography still wins for one-off shots and organic materials; CGI wins on catalogues, variants and products that don’t exist yet.

01 · What is product rendering?

A product render is a 2D image generated from a 3D model. An artist builds a digital replica of your product, applies real material properties (brushed aluminium reflects light differently than anodised aluminium — the software knows the difference), places digital lights and cameras around it, and lets a render engine calculate how every ray of light would bounce. The output behaves like a photograph because, physically speaking, it was computed like one.

People use a few overlapping terms, so it’s worth untangling them:

  • 3D modelling — building the digital object itself, usually from CAD files, drawings or reference photos. This happens first.
  • 3D visualization — the whole discipline, from modelling through to final imagery.
  • Product rendering — the step that produces the final image, and the word most people use for the result.
  • CGI product photography — a marketing-friendly synonym, framed for people replacing photo shoots.

The distinction only matters when you’re comparing quotes — a studio quoting “rendering only” may be assuming you already have a usable 3D model, which you may not.

02 · Why CGI

Why brands render instead of shoot

Nobody switches to CGI because it’s fashionable. They switch because of maths that becomes obvious the moment a catalogue grows. A real example from our own work: a consumer goods brand needed imagery for 29 products across 5 markets — 145 final images in total. Shooting that means samples shipped, a set built, days of photography, then reshoots when packaging changes. We modelled each product once and rendered all 145 images in 21 days. When a label changed later, the fix was a re-render, not a re-shoot.

  • Sell before manufacturing. Renders come from CAD data, so marketing starts while the product is still tooling.
  • Every variant from one model. A sofa in twelve fabrics is twelve renders, not twelve shoots.
  • Consistency across a catalogue. Same lighting, camera and shadows across 300 SKUs.
  • Impossible shots. Exploded views, cutaways, liquid frozen mid-splash.

IKEA is the usual proof point, and it’s a good one: by their own account roughly three quarters of their catalogue imagery is CGI. The technology question is settled — the real questions are cost and execution.

03 · Process

How the process actually works

Every studio describes this slightly differently, but under the hood it’s five steps — here’s how it runs on our product rendering projects:

  • 1 · Brief and files. Send STEP/IGES exports, OBJ/FBX, or just photos with measurements. We scope it and send a fixed, line-itemed quote.
  • 2 · Modelling and clean-up. Engineering CAD is built for manufacturing, not pictures. Surfaces get rebuilt, internals stripped, and visible details — seams, threads, embossed logos — modelled properly. This step decides whether the final image looks real.
  • 3 · Materials and lighting. Physically accurate roughness, reflectivity, translucency; then the scene is lit like a photographer lights a set. Glass, chrome and clear liquids are the hard cases — and where experience shows.
  • 4 · Test renders and revisions. Low-res test frames in 1–3 days to approve angles and composition before final quality. Most changes happen here, where they’re cheap.
  • 5 · Final delivery. High-res finals cut to your channels — Amazon main-image rules, Shopify ratios, print CMYK, ad crops. The model persists, so more angles next quarter cost a fraction of the original project.
04 · Deliverables

More than stills: what one model can produce

The still image is only the first output. Once an accurate model exists, the same asset feeds several formats — this is where the economics of CGI compound:

  • Studio stills — white-background, multi-angle images for listings and catalogues. The workhorse.
  • Lifestyle scenes — your product in a styled, sunlit environment; the Durasein surface collection shows lifestyle work carrying a brand’s whole look.

  • Colour and material variants — unlimited colourways from the master scene, pixel-consistent.
  • Category workfurniture rendering with fabric libraries and room sets, and lighting product rendering, the most technically unforgiving niche we work in.
  • Animation — exploded assemblies, feature callouts, 15-second ads. Priced separately, built on the same model.
05 · Quality

What separates a convincing render from an obvious one

Clients often ask why two studios quote wildly different prices for “the same image.” The answer is almost always in details most people can’t name but everyone can feel. A render reads as fake when:

  • The shadows are wrong. Real objects sit in soft contact shadows. Cheap renders float — the product looks pasted on.
  • Everything is too perfect. Real products have micro-scratches and slightly rounded edges. A perfectly sharp edge doesn’t exist in manufacturing, and the eye knows it.
  • Materials behave uniformly. Moulded plastic has faint flow marks; brushed metal reflects differently along and across the grain; fabric has direction. Flat materials are the biggest giveaway.
  • The lighting has no story. Good product imagery is lit deliberately — a key light shaping form, a rim light separating it from the background.

None of this requires magic; it requires artist-hours. That’s the honest reason quality and price correlate — judge a studio by whether you can zoom into a render on their portfolio and still believe it.

We sell renders, so you’d expect us to say rendering always wins. It doesn’t, and pretending otherwise is how clients end up disappointed.

Photography is the better tool when: you need one or two images of a product that already exists; the product’s appeal is organic imperfection (food, natural textiles, hand-made goods); or you need real people genuinely using the product.

Rendering wins when: the product doesn’t exist yet; you have more than a handful of SKUs or variants — the crossover point is usually five to ten images, after which CGI’s per-image cost drops below photography and keeps dropping; consistency matters across a catalogue; or you need angles and physics a camera can’t capture.

Plenty of our clients run both: photography for hero brand moments, renders for the catalogue, variants and everything Amazon. That mix is usually the right answer — any studio that tells you otherwise is selling, not advising.

07 · Pricing

What product rendering costs in 2026

Across the market, a single product render runs roughly $100 to $1,000+, depending on who’s doing it and how complex the product is. As a rough map of 2026 pricing:

  • Simple product, white background: $99–$300 per image.
  • Multi-part or configured product: $300–$900.
  • High-end and luxury goods: $400–$1,500 — jewellery, watches, anything dominated by glass, gems or liquids.
  • Full e-commerce package per product: $800–$3,500+ (multiple angles plus a lifestyle scene).
  • Catalogue projects (50+ SKUs): expect 20–40% off per-image rates.

One buying tip: always ask whether modelling is included in a quoted price. “$60 per render” often means “$60 per render, plus a modelling fee you’ll discover later.” Fixed, line-itemed quotes exist; insist on them.

08 · Files & timelines

What files you need — and how long it takes

The ideal starting point is CAD data — STEP and IGES are the most common exchange formats; native SolidWorks, Fusion 360 and Rhino files work too, as do OBJ, FBX and 3ds Max scenes. No CAD? Not a problem, just a different path: we regularly build render-ready models from clear photos plus key measurements, technical drawings, or a physical sample and a tape measure (for one furniture client, that’s all there was).

The two things that most improve results are material references — a photo of the actual fabric or finish beats any written description — and two or three examples of imagery you like. “Dark grey, kind of matte” has ruined more renders than bad software ever has.

Timelines: first test renders in 1–3 days, final studio stills within about a week, larger lifestyle or catalogue projects in two to three weeks. The 29-product project above ran 21 days from brief to 145 delivered finals. If a launch date is breathing down your neck, say so upfront — rush lanes exist, but they need to be planned, not improvised.

Who uses product rendering — and how to choose a studio

Who buys product rendering: Amazon and marketplace sellers (main-image-compliant whites, infographics, A+ Content); e-commerce and DTC brands (PDP heroes, ads, variant swatches); manufacturers (CAD-to-marketing imagery for products that are heavy, dangerous or not built yet); furniture and lighting brands; product designers and startups pitching investors; and marketing agencies that need a rendering partner behind the scenes.

How to choose a studio — what we’d check before hiring anyone, including us:

  • Portfolio realism, zoomed in. Look at reflections, fabric weave, and contact shadows — that’s where amateur work gives itself away.
  • A test-render checkpoint. If the process goes straight from brief to finals, revisions will be expensive and late.
  • Fixed quotes, modelling included. See the pricing section above.
  • Who you’ll actually talk to. Large studios route you through project managers; founder-led teams put you next to the artist. Response time and translation loss differ a lot.
  • Rights and files. Confirm in writing that you own the finals, and ask what happens to the 3D model — you’ll want it for next year’s variants.

How to brief one — bad briefs fail the same way every time: the studio guessed, the client assumed, and nobody wrote down which of the two greys the plastic actually is. Send: your files (or photos + measurements), material truth (a Pantone code or a swatch photo), the channel list (Amazon, Shopify, print — this decides ratios and crops), two or three reference images, and the deadline that actually matters. With that, any competent studio can give a fixed quote on the first reply — it’s exactly what our quote form asks for.

10 · FAQ & the future

Is a render cheaper than a photo shoot? For one image, usually not. Across a catalogue, almost always — once the model exists, each additional angle or variant costs a fraction of an equivalent shoot.

Can renders be used on Amazon? Yes. Amazon’s rules govern what the main image shows (product on pure white, filling the frame), not how it was produced — and it’s easier to make a render meet the spec.

Will people be able to tell it’s a render? Not if it’s done well. If an image is recognisably CGI, it’s a bad render.

Do I need to send my product in? No — everything happens from files, which is a genuine advantage for large, fragile or pre-production items.

Where this is heading: AI now compresses the boring hours of production (backgrounds, upscaling, concepts) but doesn’t replace accurate product geometry — an AI image of “a watch like yours” is not your watch. Meanwhile interactive 3D/AR and real-time configurators run on the same master models we build for rendering, so ask for web-ready exports (GLB/USDZ) while the asset is fresh.
