02 ·The Rendering process
3D rendering is the process of turning a digital 3D model into a photorealistic image or animation. In product design specifically, it means taking a concept — a CAD file, a sketch, or even just reference photos — and generating a visual you can actually evaluate, share, and sell from, before a single physical unit exists.
That’s different from architectural rendering (which shows spaces) or general CGI (which can mean almost anything from film VFX to game assets). Product rendering is narrowly about one object — or a family of related objects — shown clearly enough that someone can judge form, material, and finish without holding it in their hands.
03 · Where 3D Rendering fits?
This is the part most guides skip, and it’s the part that actually matters when you’re planning a project. Rendering isn’t one deliverable — it shows up at four distinct points, and each one has a different job.

04 · 3D rendering Workflow
Whichever stage you’re at, the underlying process is the same four steps.
Modeling. Everything starts with a 3D model. If you have CAD files (SolidWorks, Rhino, Fusion 360), that’s the fastest path — dimensions are already locked in. If you don’t, a studio can build the model from photos, sketches, or a physical sample with measurements. This step matters more than people expect: a sloppy model makes every later step harder.
Materials and texturing. This is where the product stops looking like grey plastic and starts looking like your product — brushed aluminum, matte ceramic, stitched leather, whatever it actually is. Good texture work references real material samples rather than guessing.
Lighting. Lighting is what separates a render that looks “computer-generated” from one that looks like a photograph. Most studios use a three-point setup as a baseline (key, fill, rim light) and adjust from there depending on the mood — clinical and bright for e-commerce, warm and moody for a lifestyle shot.
Rendering and post-production. The final computational pass, followed by the same color correction and polish a photographer would do to a real photo — contrast, white balance, sometimes light compositing if the product is being placed into a scene.

Photography still has a place — nothing beats a real photo for certain in-the-wild, authentic moments. But for anything that needs to scale across colors, angles, or SKUs, the math favors rendering.

08 · The Brief
If you’re bringing this in-house isn’t an option, working with an outside studio is straightforward once you know what to send.
What to provide: CAD files if you have them (.dwg, .skp, .step, .obj). If you don’t, clear reference photos from multiple angles plus real measurements work fine — a studio can build an accurate model from that.
What to expect: most studios send low-risk test renders first, so you can sign off on angle, composition, and overall direction before anything goes to final quality. That’s the point to catch changes — revising after final renders costs more than revising a test.
Revisions: ask upfront how many rounds are included. Most professional studios build a set number into the base price rather than billing every tweak separately.
Turnaround: a single still typically comes back in a few days; full packages or multiple SKUs take longer, but scale efficiently once the base model exists.

No. If you have CAD files, that’s the fastest starting point, but a studio can build a 3D model from photos, sketches, or a physical sample with dimensions.
